Events

๐Ÿ’‚โ€โ™€๏ธ Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is observed on November 11, a time to honour those who served and sacrificed. With this issue going out on November 7, we have a few quiet days to ready our hearts for the shared 11 a.m. pause. Across Niagara-on-the-Lake, thousands of knit and crocheted poppiesโ€”made by neighbours, classes, and church groupsโ€”gather on heritage facades and garden fences, a gentle cue to slow down, read a name, and remember the stories behind the service.

How to take part between now and the 11th:

  • Wear a poppy and, if youโ€™re able, contribute to the local Poppy Campaign.

  • Plan your two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on November 11โ€”at the cenotaph, at work, at home, or wherever you happen to be.

  • Take a quiet walk to see the poppy installations; early morning or late afternoon light makes them glow.

  • Share a thank-you with a veteran or a family who carries that legacy every day.

For families, these few days serve as a helpful bridge: count the poppies with your kids, discuss why we observe this tradition, and explore how freedom is stewarded, not assumed. For new residents, this is a window into NOTLโ€™s characterโ€”tradition held with care, history honoured without fanfare, neighbours doing something tangible together.

On November 11, weโ€™ll gather, lay wreaths, hear the Last Post, and stand shoulder to shoulder in silence. The poppies donโ€™t replace that moment; they prepare us for it. If you can, take five minutes this week to pause at a display or make a call youโ€™ve been meaning to make. Remembrance is something we doโ€”and in NOTL, we do it together.

News

๐Ÿšจ Traffic advisory: G7 activity in Niagara

Heads-up for planning: G7 foreign ministers are expected somewhere in the Niagara region early next week. Exact venues arenโ€™t publicโ€”it could even be in our backyard here in NOTLโ€”so donโ€™t be surprised if town feels busier than usual.

  • Expect intermittent rolling slowdowns for motorcades and a visible police/security presence near main corridors and larger venues.

  • You may see temporary parking restrictions or short detours around busy streets or hotel/conference sites.

Maybe build in a few extra minutes for errands and appointments, and for day-of updates, keep an eye on Niagara 411 (theyโ€™re quick on road and police advisories). If itโ€™s quietโ€”great. If not, youโ€™ve been warned.

๐ŸงดNational Retinol Day (Nov 7)

Happy National Retinol Day to everyone chasing that just-woke-up glow. Moisturize, wear SPF (yes, even in November), and let those fine lines know whoโ€™s boss. ๐Ÿงดโœจ

Where to get your โ€œretinol fixโ€ in NOTL:

Pro tip: start 2โ€“3 nights a week, moisturize like itโ€™s your job, and never skip sunscreen.

Best tip of all? Donโ€™t listen to meโ€”I have no idea what Iโ€™m talking about. ๐Ÿ˜…
