š Royal George Theatre to Close for Rebuild After 2025 Season
After more than a century of performances, the Royal George Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake will close its doors at the end of 2025. The final showāfittingly, A Christmas Carolāwill mark the end of an era before the Shaw Festival begins a complete rebuild of the beloved venue.
The decision comes in response to significant infrastructure issues, most notably the theatreās deteriorating foundation, which can no longer support regular operations or modern upgrades. What was once a charming, intimate venue has, behind the scenes, become increasingly difficult to maintain.

The rebuildāexpected to be completed by 2029āwill include modern amenities, expanded seating, and full accessibility, bringing the venue in line with current performance and audience standards. While itās a major investment, both financially and emotionally, the result will be a state-of-the-art space designed to serve the community and festivalgoers for generations to come.
Thereās no denying the closure will be felt deeply. For many, the Royal George has been more than a theatreāitās been a tradition, a memory-maker, and a symbol of the artistic heart of NOTL. Its warm red seats and low, creaky floorboards hold decades of applause, laughter, and standing ovations.
But as hard as it is to say goodbye, the vision is clear: this isnāt the endāitās a reset. When it returns, the Royal George will be ready for the futureāwith its spirit intact and its doors open wider than ever.
