đ Itâs a Big Weekend for us in NOTL
Victoria Day weekend has arrived, bringing with it the promise of warmer days, backyard BBQs, and a well-earned long weekend. But here in NOTL, itâs more than just an extra day off â itâs a full-on celebration, thanks to the return of the beloved Virgil Stampede!
Whether youâre a thrill-seeker heading for the rides, a rodeo fan, or just in it for the cotton candy and fireworks, this weekend has something for everyone. The Stampede has been a local tradition for generations, and itâs the perfect way to kick off the season with friends, family, and a whole lot of community spirit.
Weâve rounded up everything you need to know before you go â so letâs dive in! đ€ż
đĄ The Virgil Stampede
Many of my friends (I promise there is at least one) pursuing a life outside of our lovely NOTL community know that the Virgil Stampede is an event worth the trip down to Niagaraâs Wine and Peach Country. Thereâs just something about this weekend â the energy, the nostalgia, the unmistakable feeling that summer has officially arrived. Itâs a tradition that brings generations together and reminds us what small-town charm really looks like.
And while many have heard about the Stampede, not everyone truly knows what this beloved local event has to offer. Itâs more than just a fair â itâs a moment in the year where the heart of our community really comes alive.
So without further ado, letâs look at what kind of trouble you and your peeps can get into this weekend!

đ§ What can you expect this weekend?
Keep reading and youâll find outâŠ
đ Letâs talk snacksâbecause whatâs a good time without food in both hands, right? Weâre talking popcorn so buttery it should come with a warning, cotton candy bigger than your head, and hot dogs that somehow just taste better at the Stampede. Forget fine diningâthis is fun dining, and weâre all in.
đ€č Now onto the talentâbecause this town doesnât just have heart, it has range. Dancers, singers, jugglers, maybe a unicyclist (who knows?) take the stage all weekend long, bringing the kind of charm and surprise that makes you wonder, âWhere have these people been hiding?â

đŻ The games are where the real drama happens. Can you land the ring? Smash the hammer? Win the oversized stuffed flamingo? Maybe. But will you laugh until your sides hurt trying? Absolutely. These booths are less âjust for kidsâ and more âwatch your dad get wayyy too competitive with a water gun.â
đ And the grand finale? Fireworks, baby. Monday, May 19thâlook up. Sky goes boom. You go âwoah.â Itâs not just a few sparklers and a polite clap momentâweâre talking full-blown sky symphony. Colours bursting, hearts racing, couples holding hands, kids losing their mindsâitâs the kind of magic you can feel in your chest.
Itâs the final chapter of the weekend, the mic drop, the âyou had to be thereâ moment. Donât miss itâor do, and spend the rest of the summer hearing your friends say, âYou shouldâve seen it.â Your call.

đ Time to brush up on our history knowledge
Before it was a weekend of fireworks, barbecues, and pretending itâs patio weather, Victoria Day was (and still is) Queen Victoriaâs birthday party. Born May 24, 1819, she was such a hit in Canada that we made her birthday a holiday back in 1845âbefore we were even officially a country.

Queen Victoria⊠The Birthday Girl đ
Why her? She ruled when Canada became a nation, and weâve been loyal ever since. While the Brits have moved on to newer royals, weâre still lighting up the sky for the OG queen. Honestly, I canât even get a decent group chat reply on my birthdayâmeanwhile, Victoria gets fireworks, parades, and a day off work. #iconic.
So when the fireworks pop off Monday night, just rememberâyouâre partying like itâs 1819.
